I live in NYC and love being tourist in my own backyard... however, it's always fun to escape a little (Bershires, Bucks County, Nyack/Piermont, Stowe, Newport, Tarrytown, Reinbeck area, etc)... just for the day or weekend. please share your favorite places within driving distance from NYC for a day/weekend trip. also, please share your favorite B&B, hotels, restaurants, shops, or unforgetable views...

The Homestead Inn in Greenwhich CT is a great place. We've stayed there twice and loved it both times. They have a superb restaurant. Greenwich is like another world; it's hard to believe it's so close to NYC.

Michelle, have you ever tried the Bucks County area in PA? it's a wonderful day trip. they have cute stores and restaurants. the Bucks County Playhouse always puts on great productions. have fun!

How about hopping on the train to Williamsburg?

I often take the overnight train coming down to NYC from Albany, connecting to the #67, which leaves NY at 2:10am arrive Wbg @ 10:25am. It's worth the extra for "business class" seating ..quieter, more comfortable, and you seldom have to share your seat with another passenger.

In Williamsburg you can find motels within walking distance, or catch a cab or bus.

Take the #66 train at 5pm to return home to NYC arriving at 12:41am

I would recommend going to New Hope, PA. It's a very cute town with craft shops, imported Indian clothing stores, and lots of psychics and witchcraft shops.

I AGREE WITH YOU, I AM LOOKING FOR A PLACE THAT I CAN TRAVEL ON THE WEEKEND THAT HAS A NICE MARINA, BEACH SCENERY, A NIGHTLIFE, AND SHOPPING CENTERS. PRETTY MUCH I AM LOOKING FOR A EARLY ITHIRTIES CROWD. wHERE WOULD YOU RECCOMEND, I WAS THINKING OF TRAVELING TO RHODE ISLAND OR CONNETICUT?

Try the Hamptons.....or Montauk. The north fork is nice for touring the winerys.

after we spent some time in New Hope/Lamberville shopping, we discovered some charming places on the way home... Frenchtown, Milford, and Clinton. not a lot to do, but very charming... especially Clinton! historic river town... waterfall... and you can rent canoes... extremely picturesque.

For a spectacular view consider a day trip to Sam Point's located in the Shawangunk Mountains on rt. 52. It is about 90 or so miles from NYC. I haven't been there in years so I can't provide precise instructions but follow this route and you should find it. Take rt 17 north to exit 119 where you take rt. 302 to Pine Bush. At Pine Bush take rt. 52 west heading to Ellenville. Before reaching Ellenville you will be driving on the part of 52 that overlooks the valley below. Look for a sign indicating Ice Cave Mountain. Sam's Point is in that area

is there a flea market in the lambertville/new hope area? we are going to peddlers village and thought there was a flea market nearby. maybe its an antique market?

This will reply to RO: there is a flea market for antiques in Lambertville. I believe it is called Golden Nugget but I'm not sure. It can definitely be searched online. I have been there but not in awhile. I seem to remember it being open only on weekends & alot of people go there at 6:00am with flashlights!

We are taking a weekend and going to Rhinebeck NY-on the Hudson,about 2 hrs north of NYC.Staying at the Beekman Arms, going to Hudson, NY to do some antiquing,Millbrook- antiquing,dinner at the Le Petit Bistro in Rhinebeck and then home on Sun afternoon..Maybe tour one of the old mansions...It is close,and beautiful all times of the year.Happy 2002!

What about the Finger Lakes? Beautiful scenery, wineries, antique shops, lots of B&B's - many are listed on the register of historic places.

Although this isn't a winter suggestion, if you're ever in North Stonington, they have a tiny little public green that- it seems- is always deserted. There is this picturesque little footbridge and brook that leads back to an open quiet green. I found it was the perfect spot for a romantic picnic after an afternoon of visiting the southern Connecticut vineyards.

Also- the perfect oceanside town in the area: Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

If you want weekend in the Shawangunks, check out Lake Mohonk. It is near New Paltz for shopping, a tour of the oldest street in America (debatable) that is really wonderful, and then tour the wineries in the area. You can stay at Lake Mohonk or just visit there. Also, there is mountain climbing around. It is really breathtaking up there. I weekend in the Shawanagunks, so I am very hesitant about telling anyone about this treasure, lest it be overrun, but it is too great not to share.
