We just stayed at the Richardson Hotel in Richardson a noern suburb of dallas. Its a wonderful hotel but you will need a car to drive where you want to go. I've seen he Richardson as low as $109 which is a great deal. In good traffice its probably a 15 minute drive to downtown.

Richardson is mor elike a 30-minute drive to downtown. I wouldn't consider that "close" by any means!
Any of the hotels along I-35E (Stemmons Freeway) are close to downtown. There are a Super 8, Marriott Courtyard and a Budget Suites within 5 miles of downtown. In downtown itself, there is an Amerisuites and a Hampton Inn that are both walking distance from the JFK Museum, but they are sometimes expensive.
Keep in mind that August will be HOT!! Highs that month are usually around 100 degrees every day.

Thank you that is very helpful, I will look into these options, probably closer to downtown as we will not have a car, only really there for 2 days to check out the JFK things, but will be nice to have a little look around so will search for other wee things we can do - thanks!

Technically, Hyatt is within walking distance, but you have to go a long way out of your way to get around railroad tracks, freeway underpasses, etc. I would not recommend it.
Since you won't have a car, I recommend staying at one of the two suite hotels in the West End.

This is how you get to the JFK museum from the Hyatt...
There is a tunnel from the Hyatt to the Union station on the next block. It's actually an interesting walk, with many pictures of the history of the station.
Once through the station, you walk out onto Houston street. Turn left and go 4 blocks to the Dallas Visitor's Center, located in a red brick building. The center will tell you about many things to see and do in the Dallas area.
From the Visitor's Center, go one more block to Elm Street. The JFK museum will be directly in front of you... but be forewarned... the actual entrance is to the rear of the building.

As I said, it is walkable, but it's a somewhat inconvenient route.
Traveller, you'll really be better off staying in one of the West End hotels. Hyatt's dining options are very limited, and you'll likely find yourself walking to the West End to find somewhere to eat! Better, IMHO, to just stay there in the first place.
Oh, check out the Dallas World Aquarium while you are there. It is right in the West End and is very unique!

Have you checked out the post "Trip to Dallas" by Dabber? If you can weed through rantings of the pros and cons of Dallas, you will find some great tourist information. If you stay downtown or nearby, your trip will be much more pleasant. Unless you're going to the amusement parks in Arlington, I wouldn't stay any farther out than the Palomar or Park Cities Hilton. There are some good hotels near the Galleria (Addison), but you will be driving up and down the tollway about 15-20 minutes (trraffic free) each way. There is not much for a tourist in Richardson.

Richardson has a couple of interesting things...
First, the Eisemann Center is a couple of theatres and an art exhibition area, and the theatres seem to be booked often. You'll find some good, some very good entertainment there.
Also, north of Richardson's Main street, you'll find a large concentration of Chinese shops, groceries and restaurants... basically Dallas' Chinatown... a lot of Thai food as well.
