We visited NYC last October and stayed at the Ramada New Yorker. We loved NYC but not the hotel!! We are planning another trip in November and have been offered a very good deal for the Crowne Plaza at UN. Would I be right in thinking we could walk to Macys / Times Square in 10 - 15 mins? Is it close to a subway where we could get to downtown for Chinatown..
Has anyone stayed at the hotel? Any opinions on the rooms etc would be appreciated

It would take maybe 20 minutes to Macy's from there. even longer for Times Square depending on how fast you walk. The UN is all the way on the east side by the river, whereas Macy's and Times Square are on the west side.

Closest train station would be Grand Central, which would be a long 4 -5 block walk. The 4,5,6 trains there go to Canal Street, which is the heart of Chinatown.

I've heard good things about the hotel, so if you can reserve it at the price without prepaying, I would say do it and check back throughout the year as there's still plenty of time to find good deals. Do a search on the threads for more info.

Also consider that November can be cold, and so what would be a 15 minute walk can sometimes feel a lot longer with the wind!

well, it's a little bit off the beaten track for most tourists, but not terrible. You're about 2 avenues (think about 5-6 "regular" blocks)from Grand Central form wher you can get several train lines, including one to Chinatown.
The walk to Macy's would be more like 20 minutes. You could take a bus across 42nd street to Times Suare, or a long walk across (15+ minutes)

I lived briefly in this area, which is known as Tudor City. It is wonderful. There is a great little park just across from your hotel (although I'm sure you will not be wanting to visit any little parks).

Some friends who came to visit me stayed at the Crowne Plaza. This is a very nice hotel, and the rooms on the front with windows were ideal. If you have a good rate here, then book it! You will love being so close to Grand Central Station, which is a destination in itself (huge food court), as well as a good hub to get uptown, downtown and across town (there are few subway lines that cross Manhattan but here you can).

I highly recommend the hotel and the location (although I'd take a cab to Macy's myself).

And if you want to get some great buys on cheap everyday tops, go to Conways right around the corner.

I just read the other posts. I don't know what they're talking about. This is two-three short blocks to Grand Central, not a bad walk at all. What's the address for the Crowne Plaza? Isn't it on 42nd Street? At 2nd or so?

When you are walking crosstown (avenue to avenue) the blocks are NOT Short. One block is the same as walking three blocks street to street. I don't know the location of the hotel but if it is on 1st Avenue the walk to Broadway (Times Square) is about one mile - about a 20 minute walk at a normal pace. Macy's is about a 30 minute walk. You can figure distance very easily in NYC. Going north/south (street to street) there are 20 blocks to the mile. Going east/west (avenue to avenue) figure 3 east /west blocks when going from avenue to avenue. Example: 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue is the same as 3 north/south blocks. From 1st Ave to 7th Avenue is about 21 blocks, just a liitle more than a mile. Park Avenue is really 4th Avenue and Madison Avenue is halfway between Park (4th Ave,) and 5th.
