I think you should be in pretty good shape. People will be leaving WDW at that time as most children go back to school on January 3, 2005.
I don't know what you mean by "invest in the special rsvp passes for specific times." If you are referring to Fast Pass, there is no charge. If there is a long line, just get a Fast Pass and come back during the time specified on your pass. Very simple.

I was there over Christmas a few years ago and it wasn't all that crowded. Nothing like the summer, that's for sure. FastPass is a really slick system and on a crowded day nothing beats blowing by all the people standing in the regular line!

I was there last year from the 31st of Dec to Jan 5th. It was very crowded on the 31st (not worth going), and also on the first. As I recall it was also crowded Sat/Sun but thinned out my last two days. However, I still managed to see all the major attractions at all the parks. Just make sure to use the fast-pass system wisely, and be there 30 minutes before the park opens. If you are near the gate at opening time, sometimes you get in a few minutes early. RUN for the most popular rides! You will get more done in the first hour the park is open than all afternoon! And stay on site, this will allow you early-entry into one park each day. This is a great opportunity to get lots of rides in (but still get to the gates early!) Have a great trip!

USe the Fast Pass system whwnever possible, and stay on sight and take advantage of the early park openings each day. Ride the most busy rides then, and switch over to a differnet park for the remainder of the day. You can go back another afternoon and finish up the park you had gone to in the am.

I have to say, this sounds absolutely dreadful. Why would anyone subject themselves to this just to be first on a stupid ride.
