NYC to Niagra-on-the-Lake?

Planning a month in NYC May/June. Today I got the Shaw Festival mailing. Wow, I like it. So if we wanted to go up there for a couple days, what's the best way? We've always had a car before there. Should we rent a car in the city and drive round trip? Cheap train or flights and rent a car in Buffalo or Toronto?

Well, driving to Niagara Falls (about 7 hours) is at least as fast as the train (8.5/9 hours) and since you will need a car when you get there - the car is probably a better choice. Flying is obviously faster - don;t know what kind of fares you will get then.

You may be able to get a cheaper flight into Buffalo than Toronto. I am going to NYC from Buffalo over Memorial weekend and found a $120 flight on AA into LGA. US Air had the same fare. There is also Jet Blue out of JFK. Then, you could rent a car at the Buffalo airport. It is a 45 min drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake:
Genesee St to 33West
33West to I-90East
I-90East to 290West
290West to 190North
190North to Lewiston Bridge
Follow exit signs for NOTL

The drive from NYC would take around 7.5 hours.

Glad to hear you are coming into this neck of the woods! You may wish to stop in Buffalo - there are several Frank Lloyd Wright homes, Olmstead parks, a nice modern art museum called the Albright-Knox etc.

I'd drive. Take a little more time and try out some of the more scenic routes.

We went to the Shaw Festival a couple of years ago. It was quite enjoyable. We saw 3 plays in 3 days. Sometimes you can get last minute discounted tickets at a little shop next to one of theatres. We did this and attended a matinee.

We flew to Buffalo, picked up rented car, took time to visit the Buffalo Museum of Art,drove to N-on-the-Lake. Be sure to bring a passport; post 9/11, there can be holdups crossing into Canada and you might need it.

Fly for sure. Jet Blue out of JFK is terrific if they have good prices vs competition.

I agree with mclaurie, fly JFK to Buffalo on JetBlue. If you fly Monday - Thursdays in May it's $49 (plus tax) each way. Although I have not had the opportunity to go myself, I have heard wonderful things about the Shaw Festival.
