Crossing US border from Toronto for job interview .........any tips?

Hi!

I cross-posted this on the Canada forum as well but thought I'd ask here too.

I am a Canadian citizen and am planning to travel across the US border in the next week or so for job interviews. (going to NYC) I was wondering if other people in this situation have had any difficulty crossing the border for job interviews? Is there anything I should take with me in preparation? Perhaps a letter from the potential employer saying something about an interview? I know that crossing the US border has become more difficult now so am a bit concerned that they won't let me go across if they know it is for a job interview?

Please advise.
Thanks,

gtrekker

I don't see why you have to specifically say that it is for a job interview. Just state that you are driving to NYC on vacation or something. Honestly, I have crossed the border at the Peace Bridge and the Lewiston bridge several times in the past few months and never had any problems. I simply showed my driver's license and was on my way.

I'm sure that once you get a job in the U.S. things change and you'll need to get a work visa. Until it becomes a job thing, you can visit at your free will....providing you have the necessary documents!!!

Do you have a passport? If not, how can you prove to the US customs agents who you are and where you're from? Do you have a Canadian proof of citizenship like a birth certificate? If you do, it should be an original. When you return to Canada, can you prove you're a Canadian citizen?

Driver's licenses are pretty much requested these days, but they are NOT proof of citizenship. You driver's license won't do squat for you if you get pulled over.

You should check the Canadian and American customs websites for actual requirements:

US Customs website...... http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/

Sorry, you'll have to look up the Canadian customs's website.

Have crossed into and out of CAnada many times. Have your birth certificate handy, the original is handy but not necessary. We did have to have the dogs shot records.
