Crabbing in savannah
I'd like to take a boat out and go crabbing with a net in Savanah or off Tybee Island.
Questions:
Where can i rent a boat
Can i get a guided tour to do this
Where can i buy a good crab net
Where should i do this
Many thanks,
Amanda

I'm sorry that this reply probably won't help you any, but when I went crabbing near Charleston SC, we waded near some plough mud and dangled a chicken neck tied to a string into the shallows. Yes, to my utter amazement, crabs are dumb enough to just hang onto that chicken neck even after you pull 'em up out of the water! With that one, nearly picked-clean chicken neck, we caught a big bucketful of crabs. Doesn't beat a nice boat outing, but if it's mainly the crabs you're after... good luck!

As E has described this is the way to crab. You crab at bridges or docks where there is a tidal wash. You can buy a crab trap, bait it with fish heads or chicken necks, leave it for a day and come back and check it. Drop in again.

ditto what E & Gretchen said. This is the way to go with crabbing. If you do the chicken neck/string combo, get a net with a handle to scoop the crabs up when you get them to the edge of the water. We crab all the time at my parents' on Edisto Isl. -- big time fun for everyone! Good luck...

We do it the same way in New Orleans off the Pontchartrain seawall...chicken neck on a string. This isn't boat work unless you are a crabber with traps and those require licenses. Crabs like mucky bottoms, pilings. Any place you woldn't want to put your feet, stick that chicken neck in and wait.
Are you thinking of cast nets used for shrimping by chance?

Go to some marinas and ask them if they don't mind crabbing from their docks. Some will let you...but it would be wise to "contribute to their cause" like buy a net from them or something. Otherwise rent some kayaks and take a small cooler. kind of small but crabbing is kind of weird right now b/c crabbers here are not releasing females and such so the crab population is down.
