the marriott always gets good reviews. the only downside is that it is on the bay side so if you want to swim, you have to walk to the beach. want a romantic place to watch a sunset - ask people to direct you to sunset cliffs. at the end of santa cruz street there are steps down to a good sitting place - i've brought picnics before and had a very nice time.

I have heard that Leows Hotel is nice-check it at http://www.loewshotels.com/hotels/sandiego/default.asp
The Hotel del is an historical old hotel that is romantic if you enjoy that kind of thing (we do). If you go be sure to check out the Crown Room and have dinner there-sometimes they have dancing-check at hotel. That is a beautiful old room. Marriott just doesn't seem that nice-its just a Marriott.

re picnic - just go to any VONS grocery store. they have deli's where you can pick up chicken, salads etc.
things to do...take a drive up the coast maybe as far as carlsbad to enjoy the scenary, go up mount soledad for a great view of the city, take the ferry to downtown, sea world is great if you've never seen anything similar, go to casa de bandini's in old town for dinner, there is a good restaurant right at the ferry doc in coronado (can't remember the name), go see the sea lions in la jolla, drive down the strand south of coronado for less crowded beaches (ask your hotel, you can park in the residential community on the bay side and then walk across)...it's a great city, you'll love it.

The restaraunt by the ferry in Coronado is Peohes. .
If you can ride one, make sure you rent a bicycle in Coronado. This is the best way to get around town. There ia a nice bike way under the bridge and around to the golf course, plus the streets are wide and lots of locals use instead of their cars. Very safe.
Sunset cliffs, while a great sunset spot, is not in Coronado. Coronado has a huge seawall fronting the entire stretch of beaches. You can sit on it and watch the sunsets...very romantic (my husband proposed to me there) and afterwards you can stroll along the beach back into the town.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply Sunset cliffs weren't worth a trip...They are a great and romantic place to see the sun go down. maybe it was me, but the posting sounded like they were in Coronado and I didn't want Carol wandering down Orange Avenue looking for cliffs!

I've stayed at Glorietta Bay Inn several times, which is across the street from the Del Coronado, and worlds away. Stay in the Mansion rooms, not the annex rooms. Congrats!
