Coronado Island
I have decided to accompany my husband on a business trip to San Diego at the end of the month, and we are going to spend the weekend on Coronado Island. I have never been farther west than St. Louis! I'm a white-knuckle flyer, so I've always avoided any lengthy trips but I decided to throw caution to the winds and take this trip. Can't imagine what it will be like. I'm just a West Virginia girl with limited travel experience. Any tips? We are staying at the Mariott Resort. Can you just drive down to Mexico? What kind of weather can I expect? I really don't like touristy spots but do want to see some interesting things. We are renting a car.
This is coming on the heels of our move to Baltimore, (that's another post) so it will be nice to have some R&R.
Any advice or suggestions will be most appreciated. Can't believe I'll be flying across the country! My longest flight thus far has been 1-1/2 hours!

By the end of October, our weather will probably be similar to today's, maybe a little cooler, so warm (70s-80s depending on where in San Diego you are, the further inland you go, the warmer it gets) during the day and cool after the sun sets. You will need a sweater or jacket in the evening.
It's likely that your rental car company will not allow you to take their vehicle into Mexico. If they do, you will have to buy separate Mexican insurance. Do not even think of driving in Mexico without it. If you do not have Mexican insurance and are involved in an accident, no matter how slight, you will be jailed immediately.
I would not recommend a trip to Mexico at all. You will find there's plenty to do in San Diego city and county.

I agree with Barbara about skipping Mexico but then again, there is a thread about loving somewhere that you were warned not to go... so who's to say? There is a trolley that runs down to Tijuana, if you decide to go. The issue of insurance cannot be overstated.
The weather should be nice, it usaully is and you may even miss the really hot weather.
You'll have a great time, San Diego is a lovely city.

Hi Vicki,
I have stayed at the Marriott on Coronado twice, most recently 3 weeks ago. It is a nice hotel with a beautiful view of the city of San Diego. Please don't waste a day going to Tijuana! We made the mistake two years ago because we had our 17 & 21 yr old sons with us and they wanted to go. We drove as close as we could get to the border and took a bus (thank goodness) that dropped us off in downtown TJ. It was dirty and every other store is a pharmacy where they are trying to hawk Viagra to every male between 16 -80! There are lots of little children trying to sell gum and little knick-knacks. I found it very depressing. Stick to the San Diego La Jolla area. San Diego zoo is always fun, Balboa Park has lots to offer. Old Town is a bit touristy but it's fun for a couple of hours and a Mexican meal and Margarita! The town of Coronado is fun to walk around, lots of little shops etc. Have a good time and don't worry about the flight!

Thanks so much for the replies. I especially appreciate the information about Mexico. I definitely will listen to the posters here rather than acquaintences who have suggested we go to Tijuana.
