We'll be going to NYC in April. I'd love to make a side-trip to Cooperstown (I'm a HUGE baseball fan.) My wife will also be going. She's not so huge a fan. Any suggestions/ideas as to what else to see/do in Cooperstown? Also, any suggestions about lodging?? Thanks!

I don't want to disillusion you, but NYC is a great distance from Cooperstown. You can't do it in a day. Many vacationers don't realize how large NY State actually is. If you have a car and drive upstate to Cooperstown, it would be a whole day drive each way. As far as hotels, I'm sure through the Internet you can find the info you need. Don't know about other things to do up there, but there are some factory outlets for china and things around there. you might want to reach their chamber of commerce or visitors center.

I took my son there a few years ago and we had a great time. The town is very small and there is a main street with plenty of shops that would occupy your wife while you visit the museum. There is also a very picturesque lake to sit by and take in the beautiful surrounding scenery.

If you love baseball, you'll love Hall of Fame. Took my Grandson there Jun 2000 to see his other Granddad's bat, which is there. However, that is about all that is there. As a matter of fact that's all that's anywhere around there. Beautiful country side but it's in the middle of no where.

Dear Ray, Even if your wife is not a HUGE baseball fan, I believe she will enjoy the Hall of Fame, it's pretty interesting. Undoubtedly, she'll want to spend less time there than you do, and as a previous poster mentioned,
Cooperstown is a neat little village with lots of shops. There is also "the farmer's museum", similar to Sturbridge Villagein Mass. but on a much smaller scale. As far as lodging is concerned, the crown jewel is the Otesaga Inn, located right on the lake. A bit pricey, and there are many motels, b&b's to choose from, and you shouldn't have a problem in April. Above poster was correct - Cooperstown is at least a 4 to 5 hour drive from NYC (but worth it). Enjoy your stay. Marie

I think 4 hours is the closest accurate estimate for uninterrupted driving time. The Farmer's Museum is of some interest and if you have an interest in antiques you might extend the trip to Bouckville, about 60-90 minutes west of Cooperstown. There's also a foine professional opera company that operates during the summer season at the Glimerglass Opera House very close to Cooperstown. I haven't been there but hear that it's a beautiful shed type facility - an auditorium with an open back that allows for lawn seating. The drive up trough the Hudson Valley can also be interesting if history and old houses appeal to you. Many historic sites on or near Rte 9W.
