Cool things to do in Los Angeles

This is a simple one, but go see a movie. It is unique from my experience because everyone sits there until the end of all the credits --probably because everybody knows and respects somebody listed there. Also the audience will boo or applaud the previews and often applaud at the end of a good movie. Also get tickets to a taping of a TV show, especially a sit-com that is taped in front of a live audience, more interesting than the talk shows or game shows. Riding a bicycle along Venice/Santa Monica Beach is fun also -- the bike path goes right through the beach.

I just wanted to add some info to the previous suggestions. The Venice Beach boardwalk is an absolute must, but be sure to go on a weekend; some of the street performers don't show up on weekdays. There's some great small-stand food there, too.
As for the movie: try a theater in Westwood or Hollywood. These are the very large auditorium-like theaters that were common many years ago. Very beautiful.
If you go to the almost-art-deco observatory, take a picnic lunch and enjoy Griffith Park, which the observatory is part of. (Also, a lot of movies are filmed there; I used to work nearby and several times was lucky enough to see scenes being filmed.)
One more: during the summer, the Philharmonic is outdoors at the Hollywood Bowl. VERY cool. Wine, food, Beethoven.
Sorry...one more: a Dodger Stadium night game. Great views from the parking lot, great stadium, always enjoyable.

Go to the Getty Museum, Venice Beach on the weekend for the best people watching in the world, drive around Beverly Hills /Bel Air, check out the funky shops on Melrose Ave, West Hollywood is fun too to get a peek at alternative lifestyles. If you want something more laid back, spend time at Hermosa or Manhattan Beach. Cute beach towns with lots of beautiful people! Have fun!
