Convertible or SUV or Full Size in Southern UTAH parks?

We had a mid-size car with AC and a sun roof for a similar trip and didn't feel like we missed out on anything. I am actually writing to tell you to make sure you stay in a cabin in Bryce. They are quite charming with gas fireplaces which we did use even in August. Bryce was our favorite.

Are you kidding? Have you seen the news - do you know what's going on in the world, and particularly the situation with regard to the USA and the Middle East? Please, if you're going to America, don't rent a gas-guzzler. Use public transportation, or at worst, if you have an invalid in your party, rent a small fuel-efficient car. After what the US has been through over the last several months, it's the least you can do.

Zim, Matters not to me which you choose. As an owner of a convertible, and having done those vacations, I say go with a SUV, esp w/ 4WD. Just make sure you get to Bryce since it is out of the way. It is my favorite, even over the Grand Canyon. I love the National Parks in UTAH, great state.

Just back from trip to Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico. Vistited Bryce, Zion etc. 2 years ago. If you want to go off-roading, then rent a jeep for the day in one of the towns in the Rockies. Otherwise, the SUV will probably be a more expensive vehicle than either the regular car or the convertible and you won't really need the SUV capability much of the time.
It is hot, hot in much of the Southwest and there are frequent rains/thunderstorms in the afternoons so...I'd rent just a nice comfy car with good air conditioning and if the weather IS nice, roll the windows down!
Enjoy. Ann

The response from "thereyouare" is correct concerning credit card companies and the collision waiver. We called our three credit card companies before we rented the car and none would cover us if we rented an SUV. I would not have known this if I had not read this post and "thereyouare's response before our trip.

I liked the comment about Utah and public transportation....that made ME laugh! Do the convertible....and, as earlier suggested, you can always rent a 4x4 for the day....or take a Landcruiser/Jeep tour and let somebody else worry about the insurance-and driving! In Vegas, things are further away than they appear....in Utah, there are some lovely places to spend the night in Springdale, and "Angels Landing" is my favorite, partly paved, hiking trail in Zions, Bryce is a wonder to be enjoyed from a convertible...and North Rim is overwhelming! If you think you may try camping, then you might opt for an SUV-a great alternate sleeping arrangement if the weather turns on you....of course I'm comparing it to poor camping conditions, not a nice B&B. Any way you look at it, I'm jealous and wish I were going!
