Concert at the Tabernacle in Atlanta
We are going to a concert at the Tabernacle. I would like to stay at a downtown hotel and walk to and from the venue. Hampton Inn and Marriott Downtown appear to be the closest.
I have read a lot about it not being safe to walk downtown after dark. Do I need to consider staying outside of downtown and drive or take a cab? Or will we be fine to walk to and from the concert?

After the concert you will likely encounter a lot of traffic and people walking around. I think the Marriot is a bit of a walk away though. Not sure about Hampton Inn. Other than that Downtown gets to be a bit on the deserted side and tends to be a bit creepy late at night. There's no more crime than your average city..just keep your wits about you. There is a hotel that is VERY close to the Tabernacle called The Glynn hotel. I think it's a block away if that. I've never stayed there but if you're concerned about walking around downtown then that's where I would stay.

I agree that after the concert, there will be lots of people walking in that area. I didn't feel unsafe the one time I saw a show there. However, the rest of downtown did indeed seem a little bit deserted at that hour (on a Saturday). I never saw anything that would make me feel unsafe, but that fact alone would put me on edge.
Will you only be there to see the concert? If not, maybe you could find a hotel near the other things you plan to do and just drive downtown for the show. There's a parking garage a couple of blocks away where we parked - easy to do.
(Who are you seeing? I thought it was a fun venue.)

The Tabernacle is a very fun venue. I agree with the above comments - there should be people around immediately after the concert, but I wouldn't dally.
Downtown is hardly the hotbed of crime some people make it out to be (and I work as far downtown as one can get), but you may encounter panhandlers and it can seem quite deserted at nights and weekends because nightlife is mostly concentrated in other parts of the city.

Thanks everyone! We ended up staying at the Ellis Hotel. It was not too far of a walk. We only bumped into one panhandler on the way back to the hotel. Once we told him we did not smoke weed, he backed off.
It was a great venue and a great concert, although a bit too wild for me...lots of Mosh Pits and Crowd Surfers!!! My arm is bruised from all of the action!
