Comfort Inn-Manhattan-good place?

We are traveling into New York City on July 29th and will be staying at the Comfort Inn in Midtown Manhattan at 42 W 35th Street. Is this area safe past five o'clock or should we find an activity to occupy oneself for the evening hours? Never having been to New York I haven't a clue as to the area. We additionally plan to ride the subway for our transportation since we are parking in New Jersey at WeeHauken. Any thoughts on the safety of this venture as we will be bringing four teenagers along with two adults?

Please help!!!!

Carla: You are one block from 34th Street wich is a beehive of activity day and night. Within 2 blocks, you have the Empire State building, and Macy*s, two NYC Landmarks. Also lots of shopping with the Manhattan Mall and big box stores like the GAP, Old Navy, etc. Just a few blocks from Lord and Taylor and Madison Square Garden. The area in general is safe but W35th Street can be kind of quiet in the evenings and the block is pretty much old office and garment center buildings. With the exception of the few landmarks, I would head out to other areas at night, like Times Square, 5th Avenue in the 40's and 50's, Chinatown/Little Italy, Greenwich Village, etc.

Using the subways are fine up till about 10PM, after that you might want to consider a taxi (hold on and buckle up).

Enjoy.

Hi Carla,

Just a thought. How much are you paying to park in Weehawken? To get to Weehawken you have to take a bus from 42nd St. If you are staying on 35th St., you could take the PATH train at 34 st. at Herald Sq. (where Macy's is) and park in either Hoboken or Jersey City.

It costs six dollars per day to park in the lot at Port Imperial. We are taking the ferry to I believe 38th Street. My understanding is that this is a commuter lot.

Contingent on how many days you are staying, f you add up the per person RT ferry cost to the $6 per day parking fee it may be cheaper to park in NYC. There is secure indoor parking available just past the Lincoln Tunnel for $19 per 24 hours (incl taxes). The Tunnel itself will cost $6 entering and no charge leaving. I agree that the area in which your hotel is located is quite safe. It's a bit quiet at night in the immediate area but you'll have no problem. If your subway travels are on the main lines that run up and down town between popular tourist areas (e.g. 1/9, 2/3, 4/5/6, N/R, A,C,E) I'd consider it safe until midnight or even a bit later on weekends for a group. If you take a cab you'll need two due to the size of your group.
