Comedy clubs in New York

Does anyone know which Comedy club in Manhatten area would be the best?
My husband and I love to see comedians. Is it just hit and miss as to who is on, or is one venue better than the rest? We will be in New York first week of September.
Thanks.

Exactly, it is hit or miss. Some people like Lewis Black others like Carrot Top. Look at Time Out New York to see who is performing the week you are here.

Check out Dangerfield's on First Avenue and 61st Street, it's one of the longest running comedy clubs in New York, it's been around for 40 years.

Check out their website, they've hosted lots of superstars in the past and usually offer specials on their site.

Even if the comedians you see aren't great, at least you visited a New York institution.

Comix, Gotham Comedy Club, Carolines all have websites to check out schedules. Also try Upright Citizens Brigade, a sketch/Improv group that is the training ground for many comedians - Amy Poehler, Horatio Sanz and others started there and regularly return to do shows.

My wife and I will usually look to go to the Gotham Comedy Club on West 23rd. Think all of them are essentially the same in terms of two drink minimums, etc. We're not all that interested to finding some well known headliner as we'll wait for Vegas to do that.

Yes, mp, Upright Citizens Brigade was a highlight of our trip to NYC last year. We loved these very creative people working in a funky basement setting--loads of fun.

Rats. UCB sounded great but down a flight of stairs so not possible for us right now. My DH is in a wheelchair for a few months. I will check out the other ones though, thanks.
