Coastal route from New York to Virginia (and maybe N.C.)

I'm heading south in a few days and am thinking of taking the coastal route to avoid 95. That would mean the Cape May Ferry, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and maybe the Ocracoke-Cedar Island Ferry. Good idea? Bad? If good, any suggested layovers, restaurants, etc.? Thanks much.

Going down the Garden State to Cape May and taking the Ferry to Lewes MD then down the Delmarva and across the Bay Bridge/Tunnel is one of our favorite ways to head south. You can stop at Chincoteague/Assateague for the night. We stay at a motel near the entrance to the National Park and take a ride through it that evening, and again in the morning with a hike or two. There are a couple of local places to eat in Chincoteague.

Then take 17 south and/or head out to the Outer Banks in NC. Visit Kitty Hawk before heading down the OB.

Take the stress out and get an easy pass for the tolls along the way. I got ours from Massachusetts, on line, but you can probably get one from NY that way too. Put money on it with a charge card and have them refill it automatically. Make sure there is plenty on it before you go down as there are lots of tolls.

Should be a great trip but chilly. Enjoy the fine seafood in the area and have a safe trip.

I haven't done the north part but I've been all up and down the Banks. It's fun. You probably need to decide what you're going to do once you get to the south part of the Banks: take the ferry back to the mainland or drive back up to Manteo. Did you want to continue south?

If you take the Cape May ferry, it would be to Lewes, DE not MD. There's a great place in Lewes to have lunch called The Buttery.

Thanks for the advice. Got the EZ Pass, and I'm gonna do it. Weather looks a bit brisk but better than the East End of Long Island, where I am now. Have noted the park and restaurant tips and will keep an eye out. Thanks again.
