You really have just six days, and you have to end in Portland. I think you might do best skipping the CT and RI portions of the trip.
Mystic itself is a cute tourist town, but not worth going out of your way for, otherwise (avoid the pizza, strictly Greek in a pan). Mystic Seaport works on two levels -- as a recreation of a 19th century seaport (good if you llike that sort of thing) and as the nation's foremost maritime museum, with an extraordinary collection of traditional workboats, designs, and art. That is very much worth going out of your way to see, but only if its a strong interest.
End of July will be hot as blazes. I said skip RI, but you might want to substitute Newport for Boston. It has good beaches and plenty to see. You really need more time to see Boston.
Then I'd head north. Since you seem to like historic recreations, you might want to look into Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth.
I think Maine has the most scenic coast in the east, so I'd head to Kennbunkport and check into one of the large hotels on the shore.
This has you skipping the Cape, South Shore and Boston, but I really don't think you can fit those in with six days.

hi sarahevan5,
i want to add that arriving in "providence" is actually in Warwick, RI and i really think that it makes sense to spend the first night in Newport, skipping Mystic ( sort of out of your way considering the rest of your plan )
you don't say where you are staying upon arrival, and it might be with family. But if not, then a drive to Newport from the airport is better then heading further south to Mystic.

Hi I had the same trip and about the same time for 3 weeks. DON"T use Hotwire. I used them in Portland Maine. They say 3-4 star hotel for for price of 2 star. After the hotel was revelled and looked at the reviews at several sites I wanted my money back. Hotwire says SOL. Hotel was Sheraton south Portland. Bad reviews doesn't matter to Hotwire. One of the comments was maybe the hotel is a 1 star at best. I won't be there due to a change of plans. So the hotel can fill the rooms twice now and the city can get twice the taxes. I had no problem cancelling the plane tickets rental car and other hotels. except Hotwire. I tried to cancel my log on and they said no.

Oh sorry I hope you have a great trip, I so much wanted to do the same but things came up. and had to cancel. I was flying into Boston from Ca. I had a hotel in Boston, near the airport, for 3 days, and was told by nearly everyone to use mass transit. and pick up a rental car on the way out of Boston. The hotel had free parking and free suttle to airport
