Clearwater Hot Spots
Going to Clearwater with girlfriends for a long weekend beginning of April. We would like to stay away from the "college crowd" scene at night. Any suggestions for nightlife?

The blue-plate special at 4:30 followed by a rousing game of bingo!
Seriously, I think "Clearwater Hotspots" is an oxymoron. You'll find some fun beach bars further south, such as UNDERTOW, but that's about it.
If you're willing to venture into Tampa, the Howard Street area has some nice spots, including The Hyde Park Cafe.
And you shouldn't have to worry about college spring break -- most all schools have their break in March.

Ybor City in Tampa is a drinking crowd, lots of bars, lots of restaurants, some good, some not. You could also try Green Iguana on Westshore just north of Gandy. They often have bands. Also, if you're into music, Skippers Smokehouse in north Tampa brings in name acts, particularly nice if weather's nice because this is an outdoors bar. Downtown St. Petersburg has a wonderful new Baywalk. Very tropical, lively, lots of shops, movie theatres. A new spot in St. Petersburg is Gulfport, a town on the bay with a nice little walking community with shops and restaurants, bars. For high end shopping and a wonderful food court (outdoors village-y looking place) go to International Plaza in Tampa near the airport.

I agree with the first post. There is really no such thing as "nightlife" in Clearwater. My best suggestion is to squeeze every hour out of the day with the many great day activities in Clearwater/beaches, and then you'll be too tired to do anything in the evening.
If it's absolutely necessary, you could try the typical stuff with a twist: miniature golf on Clearwater Beach, movies at the Cinema and Cafe, where you sit in nice comfy chairs around a table and can order food while you watch a movie, or midnight bowling, where the lights are turned off and the bowling balls glow in the dark.
There might be good theater shows (plays, musicals, etc.) while you're here. I'd check a calendar for that.
Just some crazy suggestions that we locals have to fall back on.

Another entree for Tampa (sorry there's not much to do in Clwr. @ nite). Go to Channelside in downtown. I just tried Splitsville this weekend (www.splitsville.com). It's an upscale bowling alley with bars and restaurants, heavy music pounding. You would need to reserve a lane early if you want to bowl, and you need 8 people to reserve a lane (or at least pay for 8 people). There are also other restaurants in Channelside, including a Hooters, and there's a trolley that runs by there on its way to Ybor City.
