Christmas Day in New York

We are an adult couple visiting Manhattan from Dec. 23 - Dec 26. and need advice on what might be open on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25. Does anyone know what will be open and what will be closed on these days?

Also, we need information on the most efficent and cost effective transportation to and from the Newark airport.

What weather should we plan for?

On December 24 most places (except for restaurants) will close by about 6 pm. On Christmas Day very little will be open.

You can look at Central Park and the store windows on Fifth Avenue. Tthe (free) Staten Island ferry will be running. And I believe the Top of the Rock MAY be open (check the web site). Also check to see if the skating rinks are open. Movies are also open.

Many restaurants are closed. If you want a traditional dinner you should reserve something now. If you're willing to go ethnic, there are more choices due to not celebrating Christmas.

Weather will typically be chilly (highs around 40, lows below freeing) and possibly damp and windy. You may well get rain or sleet, but there usually isn't much snow then - although about 6 years ago we had 10" on Christmas eve/day.

Not cold enough to affect your doing anyhting as long as you're properly dressed in winter clothing (warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf and waterproffed shoes to boots comfy for a lot of walking).

While this list is from last year, it should be pretty accurate on what's open on Xmas day except for B'way shows.

Playbill.com will have a list of what's on as time gets closer. Right now they just have the Thanksgiving schedule.

Popular activities include ice skating, walking the dept. store windows, movies.

Go to wunderground.com or some other weather website to see previous years temps at that time. It's really hard to predict.

Transport from Newark depends on where you're going in Manhattan. The very cheapest option is a NJ transit bus that costs $4.40/person (exact change required) to Port Authority bus terminal. There are also train options to Penn station in NYC.

You can try opentable.com for restaurants for Xmas day. Christmas Eve shouldn't be a problem unless you want a popular place. One of our best Christmas Eve dinners was at Roberto Passon. It was quite nice and not outrageously priced.

You can go to see the big Xmas tree, which would be fun.

Don't forget to hit a Christmas market. I like Union Square or Bryant Park: I think the outdoor markets are more fun. They both will close on Christmas Eve, but I don't know what time.

On the 24th, there will be indoor vendors in Grand Central if you need to get out of the cold (definitely be prepared for cold, but some years it has been mild).

NelleYak, we were in NYC on Christmas Day 2007. One of the restaurants open was Maison, at 53rd and 7th Avenue. The menu looks good! We were going to go there for dinner after the Christmas Spectacular at RCMH but were just too tired. We'd had our holiday "dinner" at midday at Puttanesca (the only restaurant that would take a reservation for 11 people on 12/25) and were pleasantly surprised. The drinks were especially good It's at 56th and 9th Ave.

I would try either restaurant. Both are listed at menupages if you want to see the menus.

And the show at Radio City is the obvious holiday event.... they have many shows each day, including 12/15, to choose from.

I've found that a lot of ethnic restaurant that aren't Christianity based are open.

Greek no, Chinese, yes.
