Christmas
Any suggestions for a great place for a couple to go for Dec 22-27? We're retired, healthy, active. Would love a lot of Christmas atmosphere. Shows to attend. Things to do Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We've been in NY several Christmases and things shut down on Christmas. Thanks for your ideas.

My guess is more things are open in NYC over Christmas than almost anywhere else. If you found NY quiet, most anyplace else would be worse.
Exceptions would be places ski/mountain resorts, or theme parks (which I'm sure isn't what you had in mind)

I too am trying to think of another city where even half as much is open and happening on Christmas Day as New York. London, for example, literally closes down on Christmas -- there isn't even any public transportation and there are no shows and only a handful of restaurants open. New York is the most happening city on Christmas I can imagine. And even more so the days before and after.

I agree. More is open in NYC on Christmas Day than anywhere else. Wander further off the beaten track and you'll be lucky to find hotel restaurants and Chinese restaurants serving any food.
Or, get WAY off the beaten path and book a ski lodge somewhere.

I agree with all of the above, but how about Washington, DC? There won't be as many shows and such, and all the Smithsonian museums will be closed on Christmas Day, as will the vast majority of restaurants and nearly all stores. But it is a lovely city decorated for the holidays, there are loads of museums and picturesque neighborhoods for walks, and there will be holiday concerts aplenty in the days before Christmas Day itself. Look at washingtonpost.com for holiday doings, and at the Smithsonian site for museum special events and holiday hours. (Perhaps you could go for a drive on Christmas Day? The countryside around the city is pretty.) I think it would be a great change of pace from New York.

I second the vote for a Christmas Market River Cruise. I took one along the Danube in Austria and Germany with Grand Circle Travel and had a fabulous time. Nice clean cabin, very helpful staff, and all of your meals are included with your airfare and cruise.
