Newburyport Ma - north of Boston (access by train) about 40 minutes to Rockport / Gouster - we rented an old farm house(found via Yankee Magazine) in January, but it would be perfect (if available) for Christmas, and the town is out of a Norman Rockwell Painting -

I am not sure where you are in NJ but would you consider Cape May. Mostly Victorian themes nice for the holidays. Obviously not beach weather but other things to do if it is not a long trip.

Skaneateles NY is beautiful at Christmas and they do the whole Dickens Christmas around town. People walking around dressed up. All the shops decked out.Lots of activities etc.
Go to www.skaneateles.com
There is info on their events at Christmas.
