Is it safe to bar hop on Western Ave in the neighborhood of Beverly in Chicago?
I always heard the south side is a bit scary...any help would be appreciated.

anon: I grew up in the Beverly neighborhood - it is perfectly safe...though God knows why you'd want to bar hop there.

anon: Everybody knows everbody on the south side. You'd walk into one of the Western Avenue bars & you had either gone to school with the other patrons or you knew their older/younger siblings from school or the neighborhood. Everyone was the same; no diversity.

I just answered a question about Beverly on the Irish Pub post but here goes again. Beverly is perfectly safe. It is on the southwest side of the city and is an older residential neighborhood where many native chicagoans live. The "unsafe" area you are referring to on the south side is straight south of the city, places like Englewood and areas surrounding it. I think what the other poster meant when they asked why you would want to go there, is that there isn't much there in the way of bars that I know at least. The north side of Chicago in Lincoln Park and the area around Wrigley Field which is populated with a lot of young people is where most people think of when they think of barhopping. There are many sports bars in that area as well as the Depaul College campus. Beverly is more residential and family oriented but perfectly safe.
