Superdawg! family-owned drive-in since 1948, still with carhops and everything, plus best hot dogs in Chicago (quite a feat in this hot dog-obsessed city). easiest to get to by car or cab.

I was just about to suggest Ed Debevics. Your kids might also like the original Rock n' Roll McDonald's at 600 N. Clark. It has a lot of vintage memorabilia and souvenirs, plus I promise it will look different than any other McD's you've ever been to.

Even though it's a chain the Rainforest Cafe is a great place to take your kids. It's got rainforest looks, feels and sounds and pretty good food that will please and family.
I also like Dave and Busters which is an enteratinment/dining chain which has videogames + great food. Also, ESPN Zone is another favorite.
If you're looking for local flavor that has good food plus caters to kids which isn't exactly themed but fun--try Wishbone--lots of farm paintings and picture books plus diverse food for kids + adults. Another choice is SOuth Water Kitchen on the loop as well as Ginio's East where patrons can scrawl all over the walls.
