Chicago Pastry Shop?

Hello. I am going to Chicago tomorrow. I will be meeting friends for a picnic in Millenium Park. I would like to surprise one of them with a small but very good birthday cake. I am staying at the Intercontinental. Any suggestions of a good pastry shop nearby?
Thanks

How about a birthday cheesecake? The Cheesecake Factory is a couple of blocks north of your hotel in the Hancock Building.

Marshall Fields is close by and they have a bakery with cakes in the basement food court that are quite good. It's located at State and Randolph. You can't miss it.

cmcfong,

About four blocks north of your hotel is probably the best place for cheesecake in all of Chicago. It's called Eli's--a real Chicago institution--and they would be only too happy to make you a special birthday cheesecake to your specifications.

If you call them today or tomorrow, I'm sure they could whip up something special for you. I've included the address and phone number below--it's only about a ten minute walk from the Intercontinental.

Eli's--A Place for Steak (and cheesecake!)
215 E. Chicago Ave
Chicago, IL 60611
312-642-1393

Have fun,

AL

Albert's Cafe, aka Albert's Patisserie, might be worth a visit. They're on Elm between Clark and Dearborn.

cmcfong, don't forget your swimsuit! The pool at the InterContinental is just lovely. You won't want to miss taking a dip.

Thanks for all your help. While I was in Chicago I found the Southport Grocery and Cafe....another possibility when you are looking for a special treat. Hard to beat those cupcakes!

Thanks, Chicgal. My godson was tour director for us on this trip and he showed us some interesting places. I loved Southport cafe...I could eat that grilled Brie sandwich every day for a month and not get bored!
