Chicago. Once you get past the Arch St. Louis can't hold a candle to Chicago. Chicago has two zoos (one in the city in Lincoln Park and a bigger one in Brookfield which is about 25 minutes from downtown. Chicago has the Sears Tower and Hancock with observation decks.Chicago has the Museum of Science and Industry 10 munutes south of downtown, the Museum of Natural History (with stuffed animals and dino bones) an aquarium both close to downtown; Navy Pier with an outdoor ferris wheel and indoor stores and children's museum; there are boat rides on the lake and on the Chicgao River; plenty of shopping on Michigan ave.; Art Institute; great hot dogs and pizza;. Plenty to do and see and it is safe (generally).

I can only figure that someone who lives in St. Louis is going wild here posting. I live in Kentucky and have been to both several times. I don't even think it is close. How someone considers Chicago dirty is beyond me. I have found it to be one of the cleanest big cities that I have visited. There are tons of things to do for all ages in Chicago. I think of Chicago more in a league with New York, San Francisco, Seattle or Atlanta, whereas I put St. Louis more in a category with Indianapolis, Cincinatti, or Nashville (all nice cities, just not in the same league).

Chicago, hands down, for me. Of course, two of our favorite things to do while we are traveling are fine dining (we live in a little college town with basically Applebee wannabes and innumerable steakhouses... yuck!) and peruse used bookstores. I doubt kids would be interested in either. There are tons of great museums in Chicago including the Natural Museum and one on science and industry which is really kid friendly. The lakeside is fun, too, along the beach and at the Navy Pier. And what kid doesn't appreciate pizza??!
