The previous poster had two good suggestions, but even so, if you don't book way in advance, it'll be tough to get under $100 in Chicago, especially in the warmer months. Another place you might try is the Best Western Hawthorne Place. It's a bit further north in a residential area called Lakeview, about a ten minute cab or 20 minute bus ride to the Magnificent Mile. Hope you have a great trip!

Try this site if you're looking a place near Michigan Ave under $100. http://www.justpassingthrough.com They have fully furnished studio and 1 bd. room apts. in the city that just wonderful and really homelike. It's like having a place of your own while in Chicago. They are really one of the city's best kept secrets. Hope this helps and have a great time in Chicago.

Yes,
Motel 6 used to be a little bistro type hotel.. it's fine, so is best Western. Also try the Raphael and the Lenox. All 4 are on the Mag Mile and very safe and each 1 block off Michigan. There's also a Days Inn Lakeshore drive about 3 blocks off Michigan Ave. I'd do the Raphael. I've stayed there alone many times and they treat you like family. call direct and they'll usually work you a deal.

I live in Chicago and I would recommend Hot Rooms (http://www.hotrooms.com/ for the number and more info). They reserve blocks of rooms and resell them. I've heard of people getting really nice rooms on the Mag Mile for $89-100. Any hotel on the Mag Mile is safe, in my opinion. Just use common sense and you'll be OK. Have a great trip!
