This is a looong thread and hard to follow with my wee brain. I'm still not sure which university you want to visit, but the info on the U of C was incorrect. The U of C is indeed on the south side, 8 miles south of the loop, but it is on the Metra line. There is a stop right at the campus, practically, on 57th and 59th. If you get off at 57th, there's a very interesting ice cream place below the station where they sell weired stuff like hot pepper ice cream. 57th is a nice street with Powell's books. The main campus starts just east a few blocks. It extends south of 59th, so if you got off at 59th, you'd be right on the midway. The Museum of Science and Industry is on the other side of the tracks, about 1/2 block away, through a park. There is also good bus service to Hyde Park.

Oops. Meant the main campus starts just a few blocks west of the metra tracks on 57th. If you got off at 59th, you'd be on the midway, and have to walk a few blocks west to the campus, as well.

The weather forecast is not good for "my" days there! What do you wear when it's 75 and raining

Actually, my question is about Hancock - if the day is rainy/cloudy/foggy is it still worth it to go up for... the view?

Faina, don't worry about the weather report. It is OFTEN very wrong this far ahead. And I have done the view in fog and it is strange. Kind of like when you are over the clouds on a mountain or flying. But I wouldn't worry because whatever it will be, will be, plus it will change every few hours most likely regardless. It's rained in the last week and also been fabulous all of the daytime hours by me.

Cool! I want to take a picture over the clouds! I can start a collection: cities in the fog (where the photo is all gray and nothing's visible )

I don't worry, it's only 3 days, and I have a list of museums to visit. And GTGs

Bayou, if my camera doesn't fail, and Sfowler doesn't forget hers, we'll have pictures! Beats some 2-seconds waving, huh?

Faina, we want to see you waving at us if you happen to be around a web cam.

Just move your computer looking at my picture, so it will seem like waving.

This is SO funny. I just googled web cam Chicago and got about 20 of them. Loyola Water Tower and North both have great ones.

But how about the one on the top of the Sears Tower.

www.abclocal.go.com/wls/

And then go to the weather and bring down its menu and click on the first one (cams) listed.

I don't want to put in the entire link.

And Faina, you don't know how lucky you are to have missed "the drill". They are holding a downtown disaster drill this afternoon and evening with a test (fire drill type) evacuation of large areas in the LOOP/ West LOOP and environs.

You can probably read about it on the same url.

Maybe Faina can do a fly-by past the webcam on the Sears Tower? O

If anybody tries to drill Faina, my money is on Faina! I pity the fool that would try and rob her!

Man...I need a trip to Chicago soon...

Man, after this post people will picture me as Mrs Doubtfire when some guy tried to snitch her purse and broke a handle.

Kal, don't worry, they will have another drill in honor of your arrival!

Ummm... is there anything local I shouldn't miss? Like date shake in Palm Springs, or fry bread at Navajo res? Or rice-a-roni you know where

Not limited to food. Anything I can't see - taste - experience anywhere else? Like making of fortune cookies in SF?

That's it, folks. No more questions. And no answers yet

I am back, and when I'll be able to see my desk, now buried in paperwork, I'll post a report.

Comfort Inn was in the perfect location! Had a GTG with some Fodorites and got stood up by others

Took Amtrak back cross-country, and it was 7 hours late! Oh, boy, do I have stories to tell
