Holly-Don't be so darn catty!
Beth-IMO, most of the no hose gang are under 35. If you have great legs, no veins showing and are confident, go without them.
To the rest of you-Time to put this post to bed. I think Sandra has enough opinions on what to wear or not wear here.

Beth-I am in the age range you are interested in hearing from and live in the NY metropolitan area...I would wear hose to a semi-formal party, it is all a part of the dressing, why should I leave my legs out of it? Sheer black stockings with a black dress and a pair of really high heeled shoes, do it for most of the men I know If the stocking part is a problem, the suggestion of pants works, wear a tuxedo type suit..with nothing under the jacket. But when it is cold, it makes sense to not be barefooted..even here in the NY area, we know when it is time to put on our socks, I think SF is the same..And not to bash Az, but they don't dress the same way as SF or NY, so don't go by that LA also for that matter, is so causal and warm, it makes sense to not wear stockings..but having lived in SF, I would go for the stockings.

Hi everyone...me again. I was joking about the Cosmo thing...sorry. Thought you knew that. Sandra, if you feel most comfortable wearing hose, then I also say you should opt for sheer black. I think it's a lot classier than tan. As for Beth2..I think gold shoes can look phenomenol. Im only 20, and I don't think they are outdated or tacky. They could look great with red. I say if you could get away with tan hose, if you really want to wear them, since your dress is long. You should do like Sandra though, and look for the toe-less kind. (get some nude hose with shimmer if you can--that would look great!)

Beth2,
The no-hose-with-sandals rule has always been taken seriously by the fashionistas. But these days bare legs are very much the style, so hose with sandals look particulary bad. My mom
in CT wears them anyway but I think they make her look like an old lady!
I would probably opt for closed-toe shoes and hose myself. But if you've got to wear those sandals to make the outfit perfect, go bare-legged, girl!
