doesn't matter. We will be traveling to Homestead and thought we could detour on the way home. Not particularly interested in panhandle--too far out of the way. Very interested in South Florida.
Ideas, please?

I meant east coast or west coast of the USA!!! I didn't even know we were talking about Florida, since you didn't mention that in your post.

plmrod, everyone makes that mistake once

What type of beach vacation are you looking for? Relaxing or activity-filled?

You could travel across the everglades and over to Ft Myers Beach and then up 75 back to GA. It's a decent beach town with good beaches and a wide range of affordable places to stay. I've stayed at very moderate, but nice places across the street from the beach (the Dolphin Inn, I think?) and spent a little more for the ocean front Best Western just north of the center of town. Had a great time each time, but liked being closer to the bars/restaurants at the BW.

thanks to all. I think we would like a place just to hang out and enjoy some sun. A pool (heated?) would be nice since I imagine the water is still cool in April

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the water anywhere south of Ft. Myers should be reasonably warm in April. We went in early May and it was very warm.

For a kick-off-your-shoes, grab-a-book, and sit-in-the-sun beach vacation, I like the Anna Maria Island-Holmes Beach area. Very pretty Gulf coast beaches, no huge condos/resorts. Nothing is going to be inexpensive in April, but take a look at: http://www.annamariaislandchamber.org/
