We are thinking of taking a cruise in April but would like to avoiod spring break/school vacation.

When would the best week to travel be?

Schools have April vacations up until the end of the month depending on the location. So I would suggest the end of April if you want a more sure thing.

Look at the schools / universities in the area from which you're departing.

I'm from California and we're going on a cruise during my kids' spring break, which is mid-April. However, we're cruising out of New Orleans. So I went to the websites of the local universities (UNO, LSU, Tulane, etc.) and I saw that their spring breaks are all in March, near Easter. Same for my nephew's elementary school in Baton Rouge.

So, even though I have children, I too am looking for fewer kids (particularly boozing college students!). So I was comfortable with crusing in April because of the differences in spring break dates (of course others, such as myself, could be flying in from places that are having spring break in April... but I'm crossing my fingers on that one!).

Here in south Florida, Spring Break is the week leading up to Easter Sunday--March 20th

College break is in March, most are early March. Grade/High school break are from the last of March (Easter Week) through mid April. There may be year round school systems that are on a different schedule, but this is the majority. By late April, you are out of the spring break rush. I am going on the Mariner of the Seas April 3. I got on cruisecritic.com board and at least my teens will be happy. Seems half of ATL will be on spring break with us. Oh, joy !

Having lived in Florida since 1980, I have gone to every spring break destination in Florida and I have to say that Spring/Easter break lasts 6 weeks. Each school district across the country chooses its own week.

As an example, in Daytona, there is Bike Week, and Race Week, and high school spring breaks and college spring breaks and then the black college spring breaks. In general, it can last 6 weeks.
