Cheap Hotel in NY

Hi everyone,
I will stay in New York for one week at the end of June. Therefore I'm looking for a place to stay in or near Manhattan. Is there an inexpensive hotel you would recommend?

Inexpensive could mean anything - what is your budget?

Manhattan is a pretty big area. Are you going for work or for leisure - in other words, how flexible is your time?

"Inexpensive" and "Manhattan" don't exactly go together, although, like any big city, you can find inexpensive fleabag places to stay.

Please give us a few more parameters to work with, such as your budget. Or what are you thinking of when you say "Manhattan".

I am not sure what you are looking for in terms of the area you want to stay in. When I was in the city in March I stayed at a place called Hotel Newton, it is between 94th and 95th on broadway. It was a great place that filled all of my needs. It was a clean, very clean, a diner type place next door to get a cheap bite to eat, starbucks across the street, the subway is right there. It is on broadway and my room faced the street so it was a little noisy at night but I was so tired I went right to sleep. The rate I had was $135 with two queen beds.

Yes- but in June th eNewton will cost way more than that - and may well be full already. It is a very relaible budget property.

But the OP definitely has to 1) confirm this is for one person, 2) give a budget in $ and 3) tell us what they are looking for.

As a start - look at the Jane - VERY inexpensive sine the rooms are minute and I believe you have to share a bath.

Look here - but keep in mind, "from" means "FROM" - usually the smallest rooms in the low, low, season. June rates will be more, and bigger and/or en suite rooms are also a little pricier. They are, however, the best values for NYC hotels....

You need to look at hotels on that list carefully.

Some are not in or anywhere in Manhattan - at least 45 minutes away - and some are in neighborhoods I cannot recommend that a tourist stay in. (NYC is the safest large city in the country - but there are some areas that are marginal - and some where you should not walk after dark.)

After checking that list come here for more info on localities - and the names of some places that shuould have to pay you to stay there (vermin, filth, etc) - like the Riverside Towers.

The Youth hostel on 103 and Amsterdam ave is a place where many young people stay and it is in a decent area. I did not stay in the rooms there but I had a Sierra Club meeting there and I did not hear any complaints from people who stayed there

nytraveler - What list/link are you referring to? It sounds horrid. Was there a post that was deleted?

I weas referring to eurocheapo.

Most hotels on it are decent and clean - but there are some that are notoriously bad.

Location is another issue - one of the first listings is in an area at lest 45 minutes from Manhattan - and one in which tourists should NOT stay.

I cannot find which hotel you are talking about - what is the name of it?

I am a bit suspicious, as there is this post by a first-time poster and another post asking the same thing (need cheap NYC hotel, w/no other info provided) by another first-time poster, Pinnow24. Am going to wait and see if either of these folks come back with more info, etc before taking time to respond.

I thought the first listing - International Student Center - had been clsosed due to it being an illegal hostel. Also know the Marrakech has a terrible reputation (claim to be a hotelbut mostly a hostel and in a state of disrepair).

The first one I saw last time was a hotel - don't remember the name - in Queens Village - at least 45 minutes from Manhattan by bus and then subway - and definitly not a tourist area - or a neighborhood I would consider safe never mind pleasant. (I don;t see the last one now, not sure why.)

nytraveler -

I think I know what happened and why we keep getting different results.

The link I twice provided was pre-sorted to list only those places with "Extraordinary", Excellent" or "Vey Good" guest ratings. The first on that list is "The Inn on 23rd".

The OP should focus on those in the list I provided sorted by guest ratings and ignore the others.

If you dig deep enough, the Euroheapo site will eventually list all the cheap NYC digs, including ones best avoided and those those you unearthed.

That said, if the user focuses on those with the best ratings and ignores the others, then it is a valuable tool. I've used them successfully for NYC as well as for cities throughout Europe.

It's not unearthed or digging. It's just clicking on price. That's what comes up.

since we don't have a price range I assumed the OP was looking for the lowest price. And I would suspect the OP isn't looking for $239 plus tax - but we really don't know do we?
