Charleston, SC - Cooper River Bridges Coming Down

Recently walked over the new Arthur Ravenel Bridge here in Charleston and thought I'd share a few of the pics of the old bridges.

I just ran them both in the Burn The Bridges Run (as opposed to the Cooper River Bridge Run which I ran in April) and it was so cool.

We ran over the Silas Pearman and then back over the Grace Memorial Bridge. Totally amazing. I saw a pod of dolphin swimming below just frolicking and playing in the harbor.

One of the most amazing memories of my life.

Thanks for the posting travelgirl.

""All those years driving over this bridge, I never realized just how narrow it was until standing above it. My mother tells me stories of crossing this bridge when it was two way traffic...yikes! ""

When we were running the Grace Memorial Brigde, which the photographer (above) is referring to, you could still see the faint paint of the double yellow line. It was very scary.

People were pulling bolts and memorabilia off the bridge and I was kinda like, uh can you wait until we finish???

Thanks Go Travel! I'm looking forward to the run next year...will be interesting to see how it's mapped out. I'm with you on the folks taking out the bolts...the bridge is rickety enough with them in let alone taking them out!

The website for the Cooper River Bridge Run is www.BridgeRun.com and the other one is www.BurnTheBridges.com.

It is a blast travelgirl!

On November 11, a portion of the Silas Pearman Bridge was imploded. I've added some pics sent to me to my original post.

I saw that on the news last night!

A good friend of mine spearheaded the bridge construction and was telling me that when they blow up the bridge sections, they only have 8 hours to get everything out of the water. They have to keep the shipping lanes clear.

Haven't been there since the new bridge was completed. The pictures are beautiful though. I'm sure when I see it the thought of the old bridges will be totally pushed aside. But, I just can't image those old bridges not being there anymore. That was just part of Charleston.

Sooosally I'm right there with you and can't imagine Charleston without the bridges...I understand why they have to be demolished but do wish they could still be standing as they are so much a part of our history.
