Interesting comparison.
I'd say SC. More friendly, family oriented, easier to get to, and better selection of restaurants. Many PR beaches are certainly more scenic, but SC has calmer surf.
PR has consistantly nice weather year round (except for the occasional Hurricane). Cooler in the summer and much warmer in the winter than SC. It also has MUCH greater variety activities if you are into exploring, but to just hang out on the beach with a child, go with SC.

Both seem nice. It takes 11 hrs. to drive to Charleston. Airfare to Charleston is $300, & airfare to Puerto Rico is $300. Which would you choose? Drive to Charleston, or fly to Puerto Rico?

Personally i would choose flying to Puerto Rico. Jet Blue has flights from 99 dollars each way, many of them non stop depending where you are flying out of. I have never been to Charleston but heard it is lovely. I'm sure whichever one you pick you will have a good time. If you want a good beach, if you go to Puerto Rico make sure you don't stay the whole time in San Juan. When i went there i didnt realize that the beaches in San Juan were not great. It is a city, so if you want a resort expereience stay outside of San Juan.
