Charleston/Hilton Head Info: Dec-Jan

Hi. Thinking of going to Charleston &/or Hilton Head during period of 12/25-1/8.
What is the weather like then; any lodging suggestions? Can spend up to $200 nightly.
Thanks!

my vote would be charleston. do a search both on this site and an internet search. lots of tourist information out there. weather should be moderate---depending on where you are coming from i guess. i live in atlanta.

i've never been that crazy about hilton head myself. if you are a big golfer you might like it. but there are golf courses in charleston too.

Temps during the day will run from the 50's to the 70's. Unless you enjoy golf or tennis, both of which are wonderful that time of year, I'd skip Hilton Head and go to Charleston.

What are you interested in primarily? You can still walk the beaches late Dec, but you may be in a parka. Charleston has far more to see and do. I do love Hilton Head, but frankly wouldn't bother with it in the winter.

In your price range I'd suggest Hyatt or Westin in HH, and a B&B or Charleston Place in Charleston.

Agree with the above. You will quickly grow bored in Hilton Head in the winter, and may even die of boredom in 14 days.

Heck, I'd grow bored even with Charleston in 14 days. Consider combining Charleston with Savannah for such a long stay.

Just went to Charleston for 5 days in early March and had no trouble finding things to do...Stayed at the Vendue Inn..located in town can walk everywhere or take the dash...Some great restaurants. Some of the folks we talked to said they were doing the Charleston/Savannah combination and it sounded good to us but we only had the few days available.Check out the Web pages especially the weather channel web page. Also the Concierges at the Inn were very helpful.

Having lived in both places most of my life, I agree that Hilton Head is extremely boring. Very resort-like. Charleston is much more historical and plenty of things to do and great restaurants. If you want local seafood in a rustic environment, try the Wreck or Bowen's Isalnd. VERY rustic but many nicer places in town. Vendue is a good inn but check into Lodge Alley Inn (center of historic district with nice loft apartments). Savannah might be a nice side trip for two days.

I live in HH in the winter. It could still be relatively mild...as everyone else has said, it depends what you like to do...There isn't enough to do in Charleston, in Savannah or in HH, so if you are driving you might want to base yourself in HH and then go to Savannah for the day - it is an hour away. There is Beaufort which is also an hour away...Charleston is two hours...But it really depends on what you enjoy. If you want to unwind and walk the beach, eat, go the the theatre, movies, etc...HH is fine. It is pretty. If you like golf, tennis, etc....HH is fine. If you want some culture a couple of days in Charleston s fine; the same is true of Savannah. Obviously HH is slightly milder than Charleston - high 50's low 60's.

PS about lodging. If you decide on HH...then consider SeaPines in a villa...lots of deals because it isn't as warm as Florida or any of the rental agents on the web....
