Charleston
I'll be in Charleston in early February. I'm particularly interested in off the beaten path sites and restaurants and Gullah culture. I plan to walk about for the first few days and then rent a car to get to some of the islands as well as Mt. Pleasant . Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Is this your first trip? Have you taken Alphonso Brown's Gullah tour?
If off the beaten path you mean no touritss, try Boulevard Diner, Mustard Seed, Page's, all in Mt Pleasant, and 17 North and Seewee on 17 North of Mt P. Atlanticville on Sullivan's is also a favorite of mine.

WAY off the beaten path out in Awendaw is the Shell Ring:

It's really neat and the bald eagles in the Francis marion Forest may be nesting then. If you go out there stop at the Seewee Restaurant for lowcountry food at its finest. The Center for Birds of Prey is out there as well. They do demonstrations so call to see when they are open.
