Car rental rates - Palm Beach, end of February

This is just a shot in the dark - My wife and I always to go Palm Beach on the last Saturday in February for a week. We normally pay between $100 and $200 for a weekly car rental. This year, all most of the rates available are at least $500, with some as high as $1,000. I was able to get one with Ace car rental for $449, but I'm hoping they come down over the next four weeks.

Does anyone know why this is the case, and if there is a good possibility that they will come down later? I know this is the week of the Honda Classic at PGA National, but I'm pretty sure it's there the same week every year. If I'm mistaken about that, maybe that is the reason why.

Bid on Priceline. Check on Hotwire first for added fees/surcharges, etc.

Good suggestion, Gretchen - I did try Hotwire, and for a full size, the rate was $52 per day, or about $364 per week. That's certainly better than the reservation I have now, but I'm hoping that if I wait a while, I may be able to do better on a Priceline bid.

Maybe school vacation for the northeast is a week later than usual this year, bringing the rates up? You might be able to get a lower rate booking Sunday or Monday instead, and only keep the high-rate car for the first 24 hours?

That was a good suggestion gris - When I checked sunday to saturday the rates were a lot lower, even though I'd still have to pay for a whole week for the six day period. Then I suppose I could do a one day rental for the first day.
