I saw Richard Simmons also. This was back in the 80's and I was about 14 yrs old. He had done some kind of publicity exercise thing in Harrisburg which I was completely unaware of. My mom and I were shopping that night and he was leaving the mall. My mom recognized him and said hello. I was of course embarassed since I was a teenager and I must have scowled at her. Richard Simmons then told me that I should smile more because I was pretty. That was a very kind thing to say to an awkward teeenager.

Just browsing thru the latest posts. I found it ironic that 2 people were mentioned.
Robin Williams, who I have repeatedly told people that he is my alltime star I've worked for. He is the most kind, gracious, caring, genuine person who is humbled by his fans. So very different then those who are annoyed by their fans.
Sorry ladies, but Tom Selleck is an arrogant, selfcentered oaf. I regret not telling him how poorly he treats people and the general public. I was truly dissappointed in his character.
Ooops did I type that outloud>

What do you do gyppielou??
I don't normally answer these b/c I see so many celebrities in NYC so often, but it's funny, the OP asked about the islands. I saw only 1 celebrity there and it was Drew Barrymore with whom GoTravel started this thread. She was standing outside (in the pouring rain) in front of an ice cream truck in Hanalei.

Haven't seen any celebrities in the "islands" however I did spot a couple this past weekend on my trip out West. I saw Britney Spears coming out of a salon after having her hair done. The paparazzi was all over her! Then staying at the Wynn hotel I saw Dr Ruth! LOL..... She is about 4 foot nothing...couldnt believe how short she was. But was VERY kind and said hello whenever anyone approached her and signed autographs.

I grew up in Los Angeles, where celebrity spotting was a regular thing -- I even went to school with Michael and Marlon Jackson (for the brief year they went to my public middle school). Since moving away 20 years ago the only celebrity that comes to mind (outside of soap opera festivals where you expect to meet them) is walking past Paul Schaffer as he was coming out of Bellagio in Vegas.
DH and I think we saw Ray Liotta with his wife and kid at Disneyland (back in 2000) but we're not sure (and I didn't want to disturb their family outing to ask and start gushing). If it wasn't him it was another drop-dead gorgeous man with dark hair and intense blue eyes!
Gyppielou -- glad to hear Robin Williams is as nice as he seems and as I've always heard he is. Sorry to hear about Tom Selleck -- I've always been a fan of his.
Speaking of nice celebrities though, I met Roddy McDowall back in the mid-1970's when I was a shy, awkward teenager. I was (and still am, even though he's dead) a huge fan of his...fell in love with him at age 8 when I saw My Friend Flicka. I was walking around Century City with my best friend, not far from the hotel there, when I looked up and saw him standing close by. I timidly touched his arm to try and get his attention but he didn't feel it. The beautiful woman he was with caught my eye, smiled and got his attention for me. When he turned around, smiled at me and said hello I was struck almost speechless. Everything I had rehearsed for years that I would say to him went out my head and all I could think of to do was to stammer and ask for his autograph. My friend remembered all the things I had rehearsed and said them for me, while I just nodded and agreed with everything! I will always remember how sweet and patient he was with me, even fishing around in his pocket for a pen when I realized I didn't have one; and his smile and that wonderful voice of his...~sigh~...talk about your older guys though -- I think he might have even been old enough to be my (very young) grandfather! BTW -- it was only right after we walked away that I realized who the beautiful woman was who was with him....Elizabeth Taylor!

We saw Jerry Van Dyke in a grocery store (well, Mexico, not Maui) and were rude enough to accost/gush at him (I love him from the early DVD days)--the nicest, sweetest man on the planet, I'm thinking, after his very gracious response. Not a megastar, but certainly puts up with being recognized a lot.
There are other sightings, but they were mean, except for William WArfield, whom none of you will know.

We were staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu in 1994 for our honeymoon and they were filming a tv show called "One Waikki West"? or something like that and Cheryl Ladd was sitting in her chair. I accidently walked through their set without realizing it and heard someone yelling, "Lady, hey lady, get off the set." My face was red and not from the sun!

In 1995, we saw Arnold Schwarzenneger and Maria Shriver and their kids at the Four Seasons Maui. We actually saw them several times, usually at the pool, over the course of our stay. It was nice to see that people respected their privacy and pretty much left them alone. It was pretty funny, though, one day when he went over to pool and started yelling at his daughter Katherine to get out of the pool. Boy did heads turn! His voice is just so distinctive!
The comments on Robin Williams reminded me of another extremely nice celebrity. My DH traveled to California a few years ago and got to spend a couple of days on the set of West Wing. My DH does not get very excited over celebrities. He has seen several, met a couple, and has never even asked for an autograph. But he called me one day to tell me how he had just hung around the set eating lunch and chatting with Martin Sheen. He said Sheen was just about the nicest guy he'd ever met. He acted like he'd known DH for years, telling him stories about his sons and grandkids. DH said everyone on the set was very nice, but was most impressed with Sheen. I've got a great pic of him with one arm around Martin and the other around Rob Lowe. He even got to sit in on a first read-through of a script! And they gave him a copy to take home!

We saw Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver and their kids in November '03 at the Four Seasons Maui -- right after he won the governorship of Caul-ee--for--nya.
He was wearing a Speedo. They were hanging out by the pool and now one really bothered them.

My Mom told me this story last night and I immediately thought of this thread...
My Mom worked with a woman about seven years ago that very much wanted to take a short trip to Vegas, but her husband did not want to go. She tried to talk him into it, but no dice (no pun intended) he just wasn't up for it.
So off this little 50 something lady went, on her own, to Vegas. Once she got there, she started getting a little nervous as she had never traveled without her hubbie before. But she persevered, and down to the slots she went.
After playing for a while she had good luck and won $500. However she started getting nervous because she was alone with all this cash. She decided to call it a night and take her winnings back to her room.
Once she was in the elevator she was joined by two men, one very tall and quite large. After a long pause with no one doing or saying anything, one man said to the other, "Hit the floor" and the woman was so shook up that she thought they were talking to her and she actually "dropped to the floor."
The two men, of course, started laughing, and they explained to this sweet lady that the one was merely suggesting to the other that he should "Hit the floor" of the elevator buttons that they wanted to go to and they no intention of robbing her. She in turn started laughing, apologized, and explained that she has never traveled without her husband before and that she just won money at the slots and was very nervous. The two men graciously offered to walk her to her room to protect her, she accepted and off they went all laughing.
The next morning she went to check out of the hotel. The front desk had a note for her. It read, "Thank for the laughter. Best wishes, Eddie Murphy" and the front desk clerk informed her that her room had been paid for in full.
I loved that story, thought you might to!
Happy journey, Tiff
