Catalina Island or Palm Springs/Joshua Tree?

For a day trip from San Diego, which of the two side trips are more worthwhile?

A lot depends what time of year you are making your trip. Catalina makes a good day trip while I think Palm Springs is more enjoyable for a longer trip. It also depends on what you like to do. You could go to Joshua Tree for the day to go hiking although you would spend several hours or more in the car. The desert would be a change from the beach areas that you would see in San Diego and Catalina. Give us more info on what your interests are.

I have never been to Palm Springs, but we really enjoyed Catalina Island. Here's my trip report.

Keep your eyes on the horizon and suck in some cool air, you'll be fine (I think).
