We have had our alley cat with us when flying. As was mentioned only a few live animals are allowed on each flight, make plans early. I would take all current medical records with you, check with air line as to what is required, check twice. They never ask for them and we did not offer. Talk to the vet about the tranquilizer and flying. Our vet gave us a pill to give to her about 1 hour before the flight. The cage for in cabin will be cramped. It will have to fit under the seat, at least ours did. They are only about 8 or so inches high and it will be a tight fit for the cat. Our biggest problem was after we landed, had a hard time getting a taxi, all the drivers thought the black and white cat was a skunk and would not transport us.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will be meeting with the vet before the trip and now know what kind of questions to ask. I will post after the trip to let you know how the cat handled the flight.
