Cartier, New York

Hi Folks,

I'm visiting NYC soon and would like to buy my wife something from Cartier (5th Ave).

Like most people I don't have as much $$$ as I'd like - so I'm on a budget! Can anyone tell me if they carry a range of pendants etc (like the ones Tiffany offer)? Or, what price do their watches start at?

Thanks in advance.

The low end ladies watches retail around $2300, theres a decent selection between $3k-$4k.

A few tips, DSM. Cartier now has 2 locations in NYC. The main store on 5th ave and a boutique on Madison (the low 60's I think). One of their most popular items is the trinity bracelet and/or ring-3 bands in white, yellow & pink gold. So you might want to know her ring size. Not sure they have pendants but they do have accessories like scarves, pens & leather goods.

May I suggest that you visit Fortunoff instead? It is also on 5th Avenue, & you'll get 3X as much for your $$. They have a great selection of beautiful jewelry and they are affordable.

If memory serves, NYC levies a fairly high sales tax, and could impose a higher one on luxury items like jewellery. It used to be you could avoid this if you did not live in NYC by having the item shipped to your home state. Check the Cartier or Fortunoff website, or post the question here; it has been a while since I purchased an expensive item of jewellery in NYC.

DSM, how very sweet! I'm not as familiar with Cartier as I'd like to be-ha!-but I have a suggestion for you: call the store in advance and establish a relationship with one of the salespeople. Trust me, they'll think you're a very thoughtful hubby and will be happy to help you. Describe your budget and what you're looking for and ask the salesperson to set aside a few pieces for when you stop in. If you give good phone--i.e., lay on the charm--they'll make you and your wife feel well looked after. Good luck!

My favorite place to buy jewelry in NY is 47th St between 5th an 6th Aves. A zillion stores, great prices.
