Stayed there for part of my honeymoon 25 years ago...stayed there after it was remodeled a few years later....and once again, was there to be in a wedding in the outdoor gazebo.... A wonderful place for romance....gorgeous view...chilly, woodsy--fireplaces...grand piano in the evenings...not that far from Carmel-Monterey and Big Sur areas...not cheap either! It is a place for a memory....wood brought to you every morning...dress up for dining room...

Mike, just thought of something else unless you are sold on Highlands Inn....Carmel and Monterey basically run into one another...Pacific Grove and Monterey do the same...Pacific Grove is centrally located, (just a few minutes to wharf, aquarium, Carmel, mission, etc...) Have stayed at Pacific Gardens Inn in Pacific Grove quite a few times...quiet area...not a huge place...woodsy...wine, cheese and warm cookies if you are there at the right time...nice continental breakfast...moderately priced for what you get...gas fireplaces...perfect location....walk through the Asilomar Conference Grounds...and end up at a great beach area...tide pools, rocks, otters, seals, (take your binocs)...the area is at the end of the 17-Mile Drive & doesn't cost you a penny! Deer are always walking around, especially through the grave yard at Pacific Grove...gorgeous area but calm... Can get wine, snacks, fresh fruit, cheese, etc. at Trader Joe's, which is not that far from there.. There are some trees in Pacific Grove that are completely covered with millions of monarch butterflies in the fall...they look like leaves...very interesting...migrating to Mexico I think...

We live in San Jose and have a second home in Pacific Grove. Many people miss this area because they focus on Carmel. PG has some of the best bed and breakfasts with ocean views in the area and it is a real town. Try the Green Gable Inn or Seven Gables Inn. Both overlook the Monterey Bay and are classic old Victorian homes. You can step across the street and you are on the beach walking path. Gosby Inn is in downtown PG and is another old Victorian. PG is about 10 minutes from Carmel and right next to Monterey. Check out the info in its website.
