Uh, where?, SIU would indicate Southern Illinois University. Try to keep up here...it's obvious to the rest of the braintrust here. If you don't know what you are doing, then sit quietly in the corner.
Also, I've been to Carbondale, CO several times. It's a tiny little town with no college. That should have been the kicker for you.

I lived in Carbondale when I was little when my Dad taught at SIU. It was a great place to live! I have fine memories of long, hot summers and lots of outdoor play. We kids had the run of the town and campus. At that time, adult supervision was unnecessary and we kept our doors unlocked.
If you get no ideas from this board, why not check for recommendations through the university? You might try the housing office for starters and they could probably direct you further.

The Beef House Resturant. At the corner of two interstates in western
Indiana (no towns around) probably no more than a 30 minutes from Carbondale (I would guess).
Possibly the best steak you have ever had. Certainly the best hot rolls you have ever tasted. Home made apple butter. Expatriate Hoosiers (such as myself) dream about it. Reasonable prices for great food.

The Beef House is VERY far from Carbondale. Covington is about 5 - 6 hours from Carbondale. It is close to U of I in Champaign. I have stayed in Carbondale for work and I thought it was at a Holiday Inn but I can't find it online. It could have been the Comfort Inn - it was about a mile to the university. The hotel prices there are generally pretty low. There were lots of chain type restaurants nearby.

I am pretty sure it was the Holiday Inn at 800 East Main. It was clean and pretty much what you expect from a Holiday Inn. Check http://carbondale.areaguides.net
