Car Rental near Amtrak - Sacramento

We arrive in Sacramento via Amtrak at 2.13pm on a Monday - though I understand the train is often late (sometimes very late). Does anyone know the nearest major car rental agency, which will be open no matter what time the train arrives? Alternatively the name of a comfortable hotel near the Train Station would be useful.

As far as I know, the only ones sure to be open 'at any time' are out at SMF. The airport is really only accessible by cab - probably a $20+ fare.

Hertz, Enterprise and a couple of others have locations along 16th street that should be open til at least 6PM - The train station is at 4th st so the rental agencies wouldn't really be walking distance.

oh - about the hotel - In downtown, the closest full service hotel would be the Holiday Inn. Just a few blocks farther are a terrific Embassy Suites right on the river, or in the other direction there are the Sheraton, Hyatt and Citizen -- all upscale-ish to posh.

There are Hawthorne Suites, Ramada, Comfort Suites, La Quinta and other low/mid-range places off Richards Blvd just north of downtown. They would be a short cab ride from the station, but definitely not walkable.

Enterprise will often pick you up so it's not a matter having to walk. It seems like with a 2:15 arrival you should make it by the time enterprise closes at 6:00. The airport enterprise is open until midnight. My experience with Amtrak has not been what you describe but that is between SF? bay are & sacto.

Presumably you'd have your car by the time you need to get to your lodging. You can check out any of those listed in Janis' post or drive up H street and checkout the Sterling, Clarion Inn and Best Western Sutter.

Also near the Capitol there is a brand new Residence Inn on 16th near L and the Hyatt on 12th & L.
