Cape Cod-what area for Mom with TEENS
I'm thinking of taking my teens to Cape Cod next summer. What area would you feel that teenagers would have the most fun at...the tip (Provincetown-Brewster), mid or bottom area? Are there any places to rent mo-peds? Any "must see" areas with kids or favorite things to do besides the beaches? Will most likely take day trips to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard...any suggestions would be great! Thank you.

I would suggest not going to P-town. It is not a great place for kids. Orleans and Brewster are great for beaches. Teens would like Nauset Beach, there are great waves there. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a lot of fun. You can rent bikes at designated stores along the route. I don't know about renting Mopeds on the Cape, but I know you can rent them in Martha's Vineyard. Also, you may want to reconsider a day trip to Nantucket. Depending on which ferry you take, (the high speed one is quite expensive), the ride can take 3 hours. It might be worth your while to stay the night there. I can't think of anything else, but if I do, I'll post more later.

The best whalewatching is out of Provincetown. You'll spend much less time getting to the whales and much more time looking at them. It's guaranteed to be fun for people of all ages and you're guaranteed to see all kinds of things. Both times I've been it was pouring down rain, and we still had a great time.

My children and I enjoyed many summers when they were teenagers in the Eastham/Wellfleet part of the Cape; the Cape Cod National Seashore is in Eastham, and it's great; rent bikes; visit the lighthouse; go to the beach on the Bay side and on the ocean side; the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster has many activities including glass-bottomed boats with a naturalist aboard to talk about the Cape now and way back when, plus day or overnight trips to Monomoy Island. The art galleries in Provincetown and Wellfleet are quite good. We always tried to see a drive-in movie and play miniature golf on Rt. 6 in Eastham. Also, the Cape Cod summer baseball league games are great; these are college kids who are hoping for a career in the majors; lots of fun--and free. They play in several towns (Chatham is one). Avoid Hyannis; it's a zoo.

Actually there are two Monomoy Islands, one large and one small. I believe no one lives on either island, but I could be wrong. They are basically nature preserves for plantlife as well as birds, animals, etc. I've never been on one of the tours but I understand that they are excellent; I hope to do it someday. Perhaps someone else has more info for you; or check the Yankee magazine website at www.newengland.com.
