Cape Cod in July Report
We drove to Hyannis on Friday, July 20th. We had planned to leave our home in southern New Hampshire no later than 10 or 11 AM, but our contractor...So, we didn't get out the door until 3PM. (The drive would typically take about 2-1/4 hours with NO traffic or slow downs.)
There was a huge slowdown at the Mass Turnpike for those getting on from both directions on I-495, but this did not affect those not exiting. Closer to the Cape, there was paving of all but one lane for a couple of miles, but traffic moved smoothly (though not at the speed limit).
We were prepared to hop off I-495 well ahead of the bridges and take Route 105 to Route 6, to bypass the potential bottleneck where I-195 merges. But *1 (Smarttraveler on the cell phone) reported no delays, so we kept going. There were no delays on the Bourne Bridge and traffic was moving briskly on the Sagamore. At about 5:30 PM! Traffic was moving normally on Route 6 toward Hyannis. And, when we missed the turn and wound up at the traffic circle, no problems there either.
If you're planning a trip to the Cape during the summer, do check the performance schedules for the Cape Cod Melody Tent (we saw Liza Minnelli) and the Cape Playhouse ("Thoroughly Modern Millie").
Ahead of the Melody Tent, we had dinner at The Paddock (as excellent as ever) where you can leave your car for the show. Enjoyed the pianist/vocalist in the lounge afterward. Before the show at the Cape Playhouse, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner (very appealing menu with moderate prices) at the Center Stage Cafe (on the same property).
Mattakeese Wharf is THE place to be at sunset. Pleasant dining rooms, wonderful seafood, gorgeous sunset! We also enjoyed the Sesuit Harbor Cafe and Bleu (at Mashpee Commons).
Fantastic places for breakfast in Hyannis included Persey's Place (fantastic corned beef hash), Gourmet Brunch (imaginative, delicious, offerings), and Keltic Kitchen (a couple of miles east in West Yarmouth - incredible potato pancakes).
One day, we went to Martha's Vineyard, for the first time (as we've always chosen Nantucket). Rather than take the ferry from Hyannis or Woods Hole, we drove to East Falmouth and crossed on the Island Queen - fantastic! Once in Oak Bluffs, we joined a two hour tour that took us all over the island, with a stop in Edgartown and excellent commentary. (And, that was enough of Martha's Vineyard for us!)
Hyannis is chock full of fun night life and live music. (Sadly, Rock has finally retired from the Sandbar on West Dennis Beach.)

Hello - we are looking for a one week rental directly on the ocean that can sleep at least 10 for a week in 2011.
We previously rented a house in Eastham which was quite nice but it was on a public beach. We'd prefer a private beach this time. Looking at a place in New Seabury and another in Sandwich. There will be 4 children in our group.
Thanks for any suggestions you may offer.

Keep in mind there are no truly "private" beaches in that the high water line marks public domain....so anyone can walk/use any beach they can get to below that line .... and on the Cape the close to privates are limited. But they do sort of exist. Not sure what your budget is but Wequassett Inn and Chatham Bars Inn are very lovely. The reality you may face is very high prices with the facilities that have close to private beaches.
