it's not open now, and word is that their target re-open date is not until february at the earliest.
if you need to get makeup at saks, there are several places uptown along magazine st. that have trish mcevoy, nars, and other high end lines.

We live in the Northshore of New Orleans (Mandeville/Covington area), but my husband works in downtown New Orleans and hopefully my new job (second interview next week) will be in downtown New Orleans as well.
We were looking at real estate along Magazine street and a lot of them looked open. I cannot think of the name of one of the boutiques, but it was definitely open because I saw people inside. I've bought makeup from them before.
There is another store on Maple that I believe is open, called Make Up Art.
What specifically are you looking for?
If you're looking for lancome or clinique they won't have it, but if you're looking for trendier lines like tarte, etc., then they will.

Sorry I didn't completely respond to your question.
A lot of the restaurants along Magazine are open. When we were there this wknd it was a nice day and a lot of people were eating outside at tables. My husband goes out to lunch for work a lot and they go to different restaurants along Magazine frequently. That's not to say that the restaurants aren't amazingly short staffed and may be operating with condensed menus, but the hurricane won't stop new orleans restaurants because going out to eat is a major aspect of life for people in this region.
There are a lot of boutiques along Magazine and it's become a major shopping area. This area looks the most normal to me of any areas. Park along one of the side streets and walk around.

Find the most current information on New Olreans at nola.com, and you can also post questions on their forums. Local New Orleanians will help you out.
Most the uptown area, Magazine St, is coming back fast. Enjoy your trip, and take an hour or so to view some of the damage. It's unbelievable, and something you really can't appreciate until you see it with your own eyes. Keep in mind what you see is months after the storm with TONS of clean up already in process. And please remember Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast in your prayers.

Hi BayouGal,
I can absolutley appreciate what the damage is like. I live in Pensacola, and lived through Ivan 16 months ago. My heart goes out to everybody in LA and MS.
Thanks for all of the updated information. I'm looking forward to driving over soon.
