Camping info/reviews! Where can I find info???

I love to travel, but due to lack of vacation time summer trips are limited to where we can camp - leave on Friday, home on Monday type of things.

The Fodors board doesn't really draw from the camper population - anyone on here spend time on other boards that do? I want to read true reviews - specifically for the northeast. (home base is Rochester NY)

Please and thanks! Kristy ([email protected])

PS - headed to Stony Brook State Park for memorial day - anyone been there?

Sorry, more info would be useful!

It is just my husband and I, no kids. We prefer quiet to busy (no Jelly stone type campgrounds). We have a pop-up camper (which is a tow behind trailer for the non-camping crowd), and love to be in the woods, but at places with water (lakes, ponds, rivers...). Love to take day hikes, but are not serious backpackers.

If anyone does have info on this type of thing, I anticipate at least those questions!

The best I have found is www.rv.net/forums

Very helpful people. A lot of them are big RVers but there are "campers" here too.

I also recommend RV.net. It's where I hang out too. Can't help you with camping places in NY.

I camp lots, but mostly in the Rockies - not much help I'm afraid. But there are other campers here at Fodors, so you're not alone.

KAMG -- I've been to Stoneybrook before, about 6 years ago, and would not go back. The campsites are packed in, right on top of each other. Not that I expect total privacy at a campsite, but this campground has NONE. I don't know what you mean about Jelly stone campgrounds??

I've been to Allegany (sp?) a few times (on the NY/PA border west of 390) and also all the state parks in Ithaca, Taughannock being my favorite. Ithaca is great for dayhikes and waterfall action. Check out wwww.visitithaca.com.

Watkins Glen State Park has the gorge which is great to walk, however I've never been camping at the actual park.

Good luck!

I would highly recommend the Allegheny area for camping. Kiasutha is a great campground with large campsites and lots of woods in between so you don't feel so stuffed in. There are also some sites only accessible by foot right on the water. In addition, there are several old logging roads outside of the campground where people have converted areas into sites. These are only if you really want privacy (and a good chance of a bear in your camp, which is always fun!)and a ranger at Kiasutha could direct you where to go.

Nearby are several parks like Jake's Rocks which provide great day hikes and outlooks over the water. This is probably all three hours from Rochester. Enjoy!

There's a little park in New York (3 million acres or so) that you might find interesting. It is kind of hard to find though...you'll have to look north of the NYS Thruway between Syracuse and Albany. I know it's up there somewhere and I've heard there are a couple of lakes and campgrounds.
