could anyone give me an idea as to what camping would be like in the Grand Canyon near the end of December. Is this a bad idea?

Well, I think camping is always a bad idea, but even you hardy folks might find the weather at the Grand Canyon in late December to be less than hospitable. You could have very cold and snowy conditions...or lovely sunny days, but pretty cold nights. Might all depend on how well-equipped you are.

I on the other hand, think camping is always the way to go.

The Grand Canyon is at 7,000 feet elevation and there could be snow and it will be cold.

If you don't mind camping in these conditions, then go for it.

There are camp sites at Indian Garden, close to halfway down, and more at the bottom. It could make quite a difference in your comfort level if you chose those locations rather than the rim. You'll need reservations wherever you do it.

I camped on top of and in the Grand Canyon in the summer. It was cold at the top even then. You may want to contact the Parks Service to get the best info.

If you are talking about camping in the canyon it should be OK:
We camped at the bottom of the canyon in February. It was close to 70 degrees on the bottom, and on the rim it was snowing like crazy.

Reservations are a must!
