I'm thinking of taking a trip out to Montana to Glacier N.P. but my husband want to camp there. Can anyone tell us if we could rent equipment or trailer? Its to expensive to try and carry our own out there and we don't have the time to drive.

I would think it would be unlikely that you could rent camping equipment. It is possible that you could rent a motorhome but you would have to check out sites on the web. Remember that summer is extremely busy and many of the campgrounds are full so you would have to make some pretty comprehensive plans. The Going to the Sun Highway has a length restriction (I am not sure what it is - about 30 ft. I believe) and is a wonderful scenic drive but can be intimidating to people who are not used to driving in the mountains. It is an old road and very narrow in many places. Have you tried searching the web?

You definitely can rent a motor home, but I think it's kind of expensive. Every where we go we see the rental units. It's a big business. I don't know if you can rent camping gear per se or not.Do a web search for RV rentals. I'm sure you'll come up with the company.

I'm a little puzzled by the last 2 answers - especially the last one from "Another Camper." You absolutely can rent and/or purchase camping equipment of all sorts in or near every major national park I've been too - including Glacier. Many people rent some or all of their stuff when they get to the parks because they either don't have the gear - or don't want to haul all of it on long trips - or some combination of both.

REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) has stores around the west and they rent camping equip. Tents are not too expensive, but sleeping bags are. If you can pack & check your bags as luggage that would be good. I have thought about how I would do it if flying - I thought I would pack everything possible inside my large cooler and duct tape it shut. Just a thought....check REI's web page to see if there is a store nearby.

PS Jeanette: Backpackers check their packs all the time & you can get everything in a pack you need for camping. Have you ever tried backpacking? If not, just go the motorhome route. The gas bill is HUGE but they certianly convenient!

We've in the same quaundry. One person on this forum suggested to me that for the cost of an RV rental for one day you could go to Wal-Mart and buy most of what you need to camp. Then you could just ship it home.
