I've stayed at the Calistoga Inn. It's right in town, and you can pretend you are in 1849. There is a very pretty restaurant overlooking the creek.

The Larkmead Country Inn looks like it is out of town. The town is easy to stroll around, so it depends if you want peace & quiet or town life.
I think there are a lot of places in your price range. Maybe some are whackier than others, and I'm not sure which ones are the best currently. The area is charming.

Washington Street Lodging is in a residential area one block from downtown - easy walking distance to Wappo's! We often recommend it to friends, and they've been pleased with it. Clean cottages, not upscale, but very pleasant. Outdoor courtyard with picnic tables and umbrellas. Check out their website.
